What Are The Services You Provide?

We are a full seamstress service. Although our focus is helping brides to design their ideal wedding dress, we work with all types of clothing,tailoring them to fit our customer’s needs. We also offer clothes creation from scratch. Simply put, we do it all!


What do you enjoy about the work you do?

I love being able to help others with my creativity by getting inside their head and making their vision a reality—whether that’s the perfect wedding dress or repurposing old clothes into new. Every job is different—as is the reward of an ecstatic emotional response.


What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

Every project is different, so we start with a consultation to discuss your project, your needs and expectations and how we can help you reach this. This consultation is vital when dealing with projects that require extra creativity, such as altering wedding gowns and clothing, or designing an outfit from scratch. For a small general alterations project, the consultation will be relatively brief!

We can do this consultation over the phone or in person if you visit our store in Bristow, VA. We also offer email consultations, but these are generally slower and not ideal. We recommend calling first, then arranging an appointment if necessary.

Once a customer has agreed on a price and a suggested timeframe and decides to go ahead with a project, we get to work. If customers have to come in for a fitting, we provide a relaxed, fun atmosphere that puts you at ease.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

My initial training was as a child, playing and then working with my mother in her own seamstress stores. By 18, I was already working alongside her and enjoying a special kind of inspirational family education to accompany my studies.

When I came to America, I continued to work as a seamstress, while also working hard to attain a range of diplomas that I knew would open up my opportunities even more in this country.

Today, I have a diploma in Fashion Merchandising and Design, a diploma in Sewing and Dressmaking (both from the Stratford Career Institute),and a diploma in Advanced Fashion Design (International Career Institute).

This education has given me a professional fashion designer’s eye to go with my sewing expertise, enabling me to help my customers create custom designs and embellish wedding gowns with subtle new details that take a dress from almost perfect to amazingly gorgeous—and of course, fitting like a glove.

Because I love fashion and design, you will typically find me reading up on the latest trends and styles, as well as incorporating them into my work, all while providing you with professional service and advice that guides your project down the right path.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your service? If so, please share the details here.

Due to the huge range of services we offer at My’s Bridalterations, we do not offer a standard pricing system. This is also due to the fact that different projects require different materials and techniques—no one job is ever the same and our prices, while competitive, reflect the unique nature of our business.

This is especially true of our clothing alteration services for weddings and formal events, where you want your outfit to be perfect, which requires a lot of time and painstaking work to get just right. For general clothing alterations—changing skirt hemlines and trousers, for example—we offer a quick turnaround at affordable prices.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

I was born into it—my mother ran two seamstress stores—a bridal store and an alterations store—in Tra-Vinh, Vietnam. I grew up watching her expert sewing and how happy it made her customers, and it was only natural that I would play along with her, not realizing that I was really learning at the same time.

By 12, I was already sewing and crafting. A few short years later I was working in both my mother’s stores as a professional seamstress myself. I had never really considered any other career because I loved sewing so much.

Later on in 2001, when I immigrated to America with my husband, my talents made it easy for me to find jobs in local seamstress stores,including The Century Fashion, Jeannette Bridal and Tang’s Alterations. Not only did this help me to settle down in my new country, but also showed me how sewing was universally needed, even in the United States.

I have been very fortunate to have had the upbringing and opportunities that my life offered me: I simply can’t imagine a life without needles,threads and thimbles!


What types of customers have you worked with?

My career—which has spanned my whole lifetime—has led to me working with just about everyone and fulfilling hundreds of thousands of needs. It has been a fascinatingly social career, to say the least!

I have helped housewives to save money by making alterations to clothes that simply needed to be made a little bigger (or smaller) rather than be thrown out and replaced with new clothes. I have helped members of the United States military to adjust their parade uniforms as needed. I have helped creative artists in the performing arts to create outfits that they had the imagination to think up—and I had the ability to make real. I have helped brides to make wedding dresses that made them cry tears of joy when I unveiled them.

My customers are people just like you, and I am helping you to achieve something that you may have only thought of as a possibility, or even a crazy dream that you could only fantasize about. Some of my customers buy clothes they love even if they don’t fit—because they know I will make that happen. Everything is possible. All you have to do is contact me and ask!


Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

Lately we have had a lot of bridal alteration projects, which we spend two months on and often hold multiple fittings. Why? Because we know that inside every bride is a little girl who has been dreaming of the perfect big day with an idea of the dress of her dreams.

We want to make that happen, and our preferred two month time frame allows us to give each gown the attention it needs to bring each little detail of the fairytale dress alive, while also giving busy brides time to schedule multiple fittings so the dress fits perfectly on the big day. Some dresses require intricate and detailed work that takes time—but we feel that the end result justifies it, and we know that all our brides do, too!


What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Everyone is different. In a world where clothing manufacturers have created clothing sizes that “fit” everyone, a seamstress is a breath of fresh air who can help you to buy the clothes you love—and then get them to fit your body shape like a glove, accentuating your best features and making the parts you hate disappear.

It is always worth researching a seamstress for your project. Your project may seem like a simple, easy to complete one, but not all seamstresses order exactly the same service. Some might focus more on arts and crafts, while others focus purely on alterations. Others, like us, offer a full service for just about all your clothing needs.

When you find a seamstress that’s right for you, it’s a great idea to contact them first to discuss your project. For example, you may have an unrealistic time frame in mind, or a seamstress may not be able to help you immediately due to other commitments. Remember that some times of the year are busy for a seamstress (graduation, prom, spring and summer weddings and so on) so can lead to limited availability.

If you are getting your wedding dress fitted and altered, booking an initial session at least two months before your big day is advised for multiple fittings to ensure that your gown looks perfect!


What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

There is a lot more to the art of sewing than meets the eye—literally! We understand that you may have a lot of questions, and we’re more than happy to answer them.

As so much of our process is creative, and involves bringing your unique ideas to life through our fingers, the most important questions that any customer should think about are questions relating to this—questions that allow us to “see” into your own creative desires and make them reality.

One question we often hear is “how long will the alterations take?”—and this is a question that will vary with each project. For alterations on formal clothes, coming in two weeks before you need them back is usual, while we recommend two months for wedding gowns (we really want to make everything perfect!). Minor alterations can be just a few days. So this is a good question to ask a seamstress!

Aside from addressing your concerns about the project, you may also want to think about what you should bring, and what might happen at an appointment. Everyone has different needs and requirements, so we welcome questions as we want to offer you the best possible service.


Alteration QA & Tips


How long will it take to alter my bridal gown?

Congratulations on your engagement! As a bride-to- be, we recommend booking a first fitting around about two months before your big day.Bridal gown alterations can require a lot of detailed, intricate work, and we may require multiple fittings to ensure that your dress fits you perfectly.


When should bridesmaids and others attendants come for a fitting?

We recommend that bridesmaids and the mothers of both the bride and groom should come in for a fitting around two months before the wedding. This time frame allows for us to ensure that your dresses are picture-perfect on the day!


How long does it take to alter dresses and formal clothes for special occasions?

Whether a milestone birthday, prom, fundraising dinner, graduation party or more, we recommend bringing in your dress or gown around two weeks before the event for alterations.


How long does it take to make general alterations to clothing?

General alterations and minor adjustments can be completed in as little as two or three days.


Can you do custom made clothes and accessories and how long would it take?

We offer a custom clothes and accessory service that will create the outfit you dream of. The timeframe varies with each project and is highly dependent on your specific requirements as well as the complexity of the work that needs to be done.


What can I expect to happen at my appointment?

We will give you a relaxing, fun experience, of course! After quickly registering your name and contact information, we will ask you to put on your gown. Once you are ready, we will mark and pin the gown for a perfect fit. That’s it! Do note that if you are attending a fitting for a wedding dress you may have to visit multiple times to make sure that the fit is perfect!


What should I bring with me to an appointment?

Bring in your wedding gown (and shoes), or the articles of clothing you need altered. We also recommend bringing a bra and a spanx body suit for comfort.
